Automotive paints are used as a finishing material for automobiles. Usually, there are three stages in the paint job for automobiles. All the three stages are equally important for giving a desired finish to the automobile.

The first part of the paint job process for automobiles is the use of primer. Primer is the layer that serves as a protector as well as a leveler for the surface area. The parts of the body of a vehicle usually have some defect that makes the surface uneven, which is taken care of by the primer. It also protects the surface from damage when it is exposed to extreme conditions.

The second part of the automotive paint job is application of basecoat. Basecoat is the layer that is responsible for giving the favored color to the surface. Three types of basecoats are used in automobiles:
  • ·         The solid paints, has no sparkle effects except the color. This is the easiest type of paint to apply, and the most common type of paint for heavy transportation vehicles, construction equipment and aircraft. It is also widely used on cars, trucks, and motorcycles.

  • ·         The metallic paints, contains aluminum flakes to create a sparkling and grainy effect, or as people generally refer as a metallic look.

  • ·         The pearlescent paints contain special iridescent pigments commonly referred to as "pearls".

The third part involves the use of clear coat. Unlike the basecoat, clear coat is transparent. It is applied to provide protection to the basecoat from any damages that might take place due to exposure to extreme weather conditions and abrasions.
